Find NewWorkPlaces

I find it interesting that the most innovative
work spaces are occurring not in
corporate offices,
but rather in public and
commercial places. It would seem that the
great American ‘marketplace’ is successfully
engaged. Retail and commercial, and now
public, entities competing for survival are
providing the new form of supply they have
accurately assessed as demand from their
clients and customers – people wanting

more than a singly defined, singly
enabled place.

Reflective of the change in the very nature of
work itself – from single-tasked to multi-
tasked, these diverse and mixed use places
are cropping up all over.

Below are just a few examples of these
NewWorkPlaces.
Retail/Commercial:
Starbucks - Los Gatos
Panera Bread - San Jose
Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay

Public:
Tully Community Library

Private:
My Home Office

Corporate:
Google Zurich

Workplace is defined simultaneously in its broadest and narrowest extent,
embodying
three things - physical entity, function and context and state of mind.

  1. Physical Entity: A physical place and destination, typically operated by
the company or organization where you go to work.
  2. Function and Context: The broader concept of company, the aggregate
of all places, polices and procedures that constitute and comprise the
framework, operating systems and culture of the company.
  3. State of Mind: Where you do work. Where you, the individual think, task,
    communicate, engage and interact.

This last definition is the ‘New’ of WorkPlaces. Enabled by technology, the
workplace is more than a site, more than collective entity. It is a state of mind
and that can exist on the physical plane, but can also exists on a virtual plane.
Because… increasingly work today is not at ‘the office’. The office is anyplace
you work, whether it is home, office, company building, coffee shop, car,
airport, near, remote, virtual, cyberspace …

This new, real unreality is what is redefining and reframing all of our old
concepts of what works is, how it is accomplished and what is needed from the
various entities of a business to support its successful outcome.
